In 2006, the Heritage Health Index identified millions of items in the nation's cultural institutions that were in danger due to poor conditions, lack of training, and other causes. As a result of the study, the Institute for Museum & Library Services made funds available to states to develop plans to support these collections. Oregon museums, libraries and other cultural institutions are collaborating to develop the Oregon preservation training planning effort.

July 2010 - Eugene and Portland Forums
The first two of five planned forums were held in Eugene on July 15th and in Portland on July 16th.
24 participants attended the July 15th forum at the Eugene Public Library, and 27 attended the July 16th forum at the Oregon Historical Society. There was a good cross section of representatives from museums, archives and libraries.
Participants shared their concerns about challenges and solutions to the risks our heritage collections face; training, advocacy and funding needs; and the state of institutional disaster response and recovery plans.
The next three forums are scheduled for early Fall in Bend, Medford and Pendleton. Watch for an updated schedule soon.
The feedback from the forums will be used to create a statewide survey of Oregon's heritage collections, which will be sent out later this year.
Many thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the forums!
